MEMPHIS (Tenn.), July 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ – Varsity Spirit is proud to recognize today’s pivotal moment in cheerleading history. At the 138th IOC Session in Tokyo, Japan, the International Olympic Committee, (IOC) voted in favor to give full IOC recognition of the International Cheer Union and cheerleading. The ICU, a United States-based governing body for cheer, hosts the ICU World Championships and Continental Championships.
The IOC’s vote means the ICU can now petition for cheerleading to be included in the Olympic Games.
“This is a great day to cheerleaders in America and around the globe. We are proud to have helped develop cheerleading into an athletic activity,” stated Bill Seely, President and CEO of Varsity Spirit. “IOC recognition will likely mean more development support and funding cheerleading, which is a huge win. Special thanks to Jeff Webb (President of the ICU) and Karl Olson (Secretary General for the ICU). This day would not have been possible without their hard work, dedication, and sacrifices.
