As a child, I was able to watch R-rated horror and sci-fi movies in my home. As you probably know, there were a few iconic films in the 1980s that were not suitable for children, but my parents were open to the idea. I had the ED-209 toy from Robocop and the sandworm of Dune. They all made a lasting impression on me, just like “The Terminator” or “Predator”, which explains a lot.
After watching “Aliens,” one of the most memorable moments was when I could run around the playground with my friends and channel my Hudson, shouting “Game over man!” while pretending that xenomorphs were following me. Cold Iron Studios hopes to capture this kind of experience with Aliens: Fireteam Elite. This co-op survival shooter drops us right in the middle of an evolving threat from xenomorphs. I enjoyed the first few missions on the PC preview version of the game. It’s close to the childhood feeling of running around in the playground.
“There’s movement everywhere!”
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is set a few decades after the original trilogy. You are a Colonial Marine, the heroic grunts who made the movies famous. You’re stationed on the UAS Endeavor, which is a large, space-faring troop carrier, and have been sent to investigate a mysterious distress signal in the outer colonies. Naturally, things go wrong and xenomorphs appear, so it’s time for lock-and-load.

It’s a film-inspired setting that makes me appreciate the fact that the xenos have been a threat since the beginning. There is no “What are these things?” moment. There are no “What are these things?” moments. These marines are fully prepared to face these bugs. They have been given detailed pre-mission briefings and are equipped with the necessary equipment. The wide range of xeno-types that they will encounter is what everyone is less prepared for. This is where the story begins.
Some of these xenos, no doubt inspired by classic co-op shooters such as Left 4 Dead or Gears of War (11 different types of xenomorphs are expected to be encountered during the game), can overwhelm you by sheer number. Others can also explode and spray acid all over the place if destroyed. This gives you and your co-op friends a wide variety of enemies to fight, keeping the action fresh as you move from checkpoint to checkpoint fighting hordes upon xenomorphs. Slowly, the mystery of what went wrong slowly begins to emerge.
“Express elevator to Hell”
I was captivated by the way Cold Iron Studios has “the look” of the films in the first few levels I have played through, mainly the Orbital Refinery Katanga. Everything feels steeped with retro-future technology, much like Alien: Isolation. Here, dimly lit corridors, acid-sprayed metal walkways and flood lights, piles crates, leaky pipelines, and old CRT screens are all commonplace.

The weapon audio seems to be still under development in our preview build. It sounded a bit muted at times during our gameplay sessions. I would have liked more power from the M41A2 Pulse Rifle, or felt a little more shaken after an explosion. Staff Seargent Herrera’s voice acting is excellent. She barks orders into your ears and plays the role of narrator during the campaign missions. The music is also top-notch. It feels like it was taken from James Horner’s film score. As the action ramps up in-game, it slows down as your squad moves through a smoke-filled corridor. This gives you an indication that danger is just around the corner.
The aliens are the final factor. They are just as you would expect.
It is difficult to predict how predictable or unpredictable these encounters will be on repeated playthroughs. However, you can change the difficulty of missions by using the “Challenge Card” system. This can alter how you plan for a mission. For example, playing only with your sidearm or finishing the mission in under 15 minutes. Or having your motion tracker randomly malfunction.

Completing these challenges will result in a bonus payout at completion of the mission. These credits can be used to purchase better weapons, consumables and attachments. You can also get additional experience points that you can use to upgrade your marine’s perks, such as increased accuracy for turrets and longer ability duration. You can also open marked storage containers during the level to receive consumables for use in-mission. There is a lot to choose from that you can alter to keep these encounters fresh and interesting on multiple playthroughs.
“Another glorious morning in the corps!”
We had access to four out of five loadout kits for our preview build: Gunner, Demolisher and Technician; Doc was not available. Each one brings a different element of the fight, as you can see from their names.
Gunner is combat-focused and can equip team buffs to increase fire and reload speeds. Demolisher focuses on heavy damage and can equip an awesome smart gun with auto tracking (or an epic flame thrower). The Technician can set up sentry guns, use charge coils to slow down enemies, and Doc can deploy trauma stations that deliver an AOE healing effect if you’re near it.

Each kit has a unique role in the fight. Finding the right balance between your teammates and the best weapons, perks or consumables can make all the difference in your chances of completing your mission on time.
“Not bad for a human.”
Although it is possible to play Aliens Fireteam solo, it is not a great experience. While a Gunner Synth will automatically fill any roster spots during matchmaking we recommend that you hop online to be matched with a group that can better adapt and deal with the alien threat. While the Synths are useful in spreading firepower, they can’t be given specific commands. In this preview build, only a basic Ping system allows you to call out an area of the level you’re targeting with a verbal cue.
Cold Iron Studios’s efforts to make this project a success is remarkable. This is a solid foundation for a fun cooperative multiplayer game. We look forward to seeing the final product when it hatches on Aug 24.
