Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at the Met Gala is not a shock. After all, she is an aspiring elitist, not a revolutionary.
Ocasio-Cortez palling around with a bunch of obnoxious wealthy celebrities while flaunting a dress marked with the slogan “TAX THE RICH” is peak performative socialism, and it’s peak Ocasio-Cortez. Of course, she claims this is some grand gesture, one that “punctured the 4th wall of excess and spectacle.” Ocasio-Cortez has to go to these events, you see, to keep “cultural institutions accessible.” Ahem.
But her appearance at the event is no different from that of fellow Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York, an ally of Speaker Nancy Pelosi who also flaunted a performative political slogan while the workers at the gala remained masked for their unmasked elitist guests. It is a perfect representation of who Ocasio-Cortez is. She is not pushing back on the establishment of the Democratic Party — she is aspiring to be part of it.
How else would you describe her shift from decrying “concentration camps” at the southern border to offering vanilla “condemnations” of President Joe Biden for overseeing exactly the same “concentration camps”? Biden was recreating the same conditions at border facilities as Trump, but Ocasio-Cortez used her time instead to scold those who were calling the surge at the border a surge at the border.
AOC on Instagram Live talking about the border:
“Anyone who is using the term ‘surge’ around you consciously is trying to invoke a militaristic frame… This is not a surge. These are children and they are not insurgents.”

Ocasio-Cortez is not in Washington, D.C., to ruffle feathers. Yeah, she once implied that Pelosi is a racist and a sexist, but Vice President Kamala Harris did the same to Biden. Ocasio-Cortez also walked it back quickly. When her chief of staff challenged Pelosi and Democratic leadership over a border aid bill, he found himself out of the job within a month after swift backlash.
The New York Times described it at the time as being “Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s most tangible peace offering since her private meeting last week with Ms. Pelosi.”
Since then, Ocasio-Cortez has done video game streams with popular streamers and done photoshoots for magazines. The criticisms of her own party are mostly reserved for Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who has proudly become the human shield for other members of the party looking to avoid the ire of liberals.
Ocasio-Cortez does not want to challenge the elites or the Democratic establishment. She wants to join the club. She has stepped into line behind Pelosi and now Biden. She treats her job more as a gateway to celebrity status than as a gateway to the legislative process. She’s a social media star that is beloved by the entertainment industry and wealthy celebrities, and that is all she really cares about.
