Nearly 170 years ago, the U.S. government started signing treaties with Indigenous tribes in the Pacific Northwest that amassed millions of acres of land for new settlers. In return for their signatures hundreds of tribes were granted the rights to vital natural resources such as fresh water and salmon.
But the U.S. government violated those agreements. They were ignored. They were even altered fraudulently. These treaties were not applicable to certain tribes.
Oregon Public Broadcasting is and ProPublica are investigating the failure of the U.S. government to keep its promises. We need your help to understand the decline in wild fish and the pollution of water that tribal members depend on. Your stories can help us to share our stories with communities and hold those responsible accountable.
Please fill out the questionnaire if you have any questions:
- You are a tribal member.
You work or have worked for a public agency, tribe, or any other entity that manages fishing or hatchery production, river pollution, water rights, or fisheries management.
You fish commercially or work within an industry that is affected by fisheries management.
As you complete the form, questions based on your answers will be asked. You can also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to reach our reporting team.
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOUR PRIVACY: We appreciate you sharing your story. ProPublica and Oregon Public Broadcasting will gather this information for reporting purposes. We won’t publish your responses without your consent.
