The case count for a hepatitis A epidemic linked to Virginia restaurants has increased by two-fold. At least 30 people are now infected with the virus, which can cause life-threatening liver infections.
Health officials stated that the window for symptoms to develop is still open, so they might continue to hear about new cases for at most a few weeks. According to the Roanoke Time , Roanoke Times According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms can begin up to 50 days following exposure.
At least three patients were admitted to hospital.
According to the Virginia Department of Health, infected persons ate at three Famous Anthony’s restaurants. Cynthia Morrow, from the Roanoke and Alleghany Health Districts, provided an update about the outbreak.
A state health official reported that a person who had worked in all three restaurants was positive for the virus which causes liver infections. Hepatitis A can be transmitted easily, but vaccination is possible to prevent it. It could have prevented the illness if the worker was vaccinated.
Postexposure vaccines may be available but they are ineffective if not given within two weeks. Because of the delay between exposure and detection, no patients affected by this outbreak could be eligible for post-exposure treatment.
The Famous Anthony’s restaurants that are involved in this investigation can be found at:
- 4913 Grandin Road
- 6499 Williamson Road
- 2221 Crystal Spring Avenue
There were 14 confirmed patients, according to an update from state health officials on Sept. 29. Since the initial outbreak was reported on Sept. 24.
The CDC states that symptoms of hepatitis include nausea, vomiting and light-colored stools. Jaundice is a condition that causes yellowing of the skin or eyes. Hepatitis A can easily be spread by direct contact with infected persons or contaminated food and drink.
Health officials suggest that anyone who has eaten at the infected restaurants should keep an eye out for signs and symptoms over the next few weeks. Anyone experiencing symptoms should consult a doctor immediately.
