(RNS] — After being delayed by the coronavirus epidemic, a copy of the Quran that was once in the possession of former President Thomas Jefferson will now be on display in the United States’ pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020,. This is the fair’s world’s fair in the United Arab Emirates.
The historic English-language Quran was translated by George Sale with a preface. It has not been seen outside the United States since its arrival in colonial America. The two-volume set was published in 1764. London.
According to the Library of Congress Jefferson’s Quran is the “first object displayed after guests emerge from an audio and light experience that showcases U.S. founding principles and its innovations.” The Quran and Jefferson are both the first examples of these goals .”
The pavilion will also include a SpaceX rocket, and rock that was taken from the Moon by NASA during a NASA mission.
“It is a source of great pride for me that this Holy Quran…which has been in possession of one the founding Fathers the United States of America, is being displayed to all the world as a symbol American’s respect of religious plurality,” stated Anila Ali who founded the American Muslim & Multifaith Empowerment Council and will be travelling to Dubai with an interfaith delegation.
The Dubai Expo 2020, the latest international fair for “the works industry of all countries”, was established in London in 1851. It has been held at various intervals since then. More than 192 countries have pavilions at this year’s event, which began on October 1 under strict COVID-19 protocols. The event will be visited by more than 25million visitors from all over the globe.
The Expo will be open until March next year, but Jefferson’s Quran won’t be displayed for three months. The Library of Congress says that the Expo’s stay is unusual because its collections are usually only available to museums and other cultural institutions.
The Library of Congress suggests that Jefferson may have had firsthand experiences with members of the faith due to his large collection of enslaved Africans.
Yet Jefferson, the United States’ first secretary-general and third president, was also keen to learn more about the Muslim world. The Kingdom of the Morocco became the first country in 1777. to recognize American independence. During Ramadan, a Tunisian envoy was received at the White House during the First Barbary War in 1805,.
The dinner was served at sunset to meet the religious needs Jefferson’s Muslim guests.
When Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Representative, became the first Muslim elected to Congress in 2006,, he decided to swear his office using Jefferson’s Quran copy.
The theme of the USA Pavilion in the Dubai 2020 Exposition will be “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of the Future.” This is a play on Jefferson’s statement from the Declaration of Independence that champions “life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness,” which Jefferson considers a significant improvement over John Locke’s “life, property and liberty.”
