RELIGION: RNS] — Fadwa Hamid made history when she was the first Muslim Arab American woman before the U.S. Supreme Court.
” When we talk about Supreme Court bars, it’s like a mirror that looks down at all of the legal profession,” Hammoud stated last week in an interview. “We collectively lose if our Supreme Court bars are not as diverse as our nation .”
Hammoud was present to argue in Brown v. Davenport. The case concerns the 2007 conviction of Ervine Davenport for murder in Michigan. Davenport was held in shackles for the duration his trial. However, there was no legal reason. His lawyers claim that his shackling prejudiced him.

Hammoud has had a career full of historical firsts. She became the first Arab American Muslim solicitor general in 2019, when Attorney General Dana Nessel appointed Michigan’s 12th solicitor general. She moved to Michigan from Lebanon at age 11, eventually graduating from Fordson High School in Dearborn. It is notable for its majority-Muslim student body. A 2011 NPR report noted that 90% of the school’s population was Muslim. Robert Saleh was also an alumnus. He became the NFL’s first Muslim head coaches earlier this year. Hammoud graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in Dearborn and then went on to graduate from Wayne State University Law School. She was a United States District Court Clerk and then served in a variety of roles as a prosecutor attorney in Michigan’s Wayne County.
Hammoud’s appearance at the Supreme Court marks one of many important firsts in American law for Muslims. In June, Zahid Quraishi was appointed by the president as the first Muslim American judge to a federal tribunal. A New Jersey-born ex-military veteran, Quraishi holds the distinction of being New Jersey’s first Asian American to serve on a federal bench.
Harvard Law Review voted Hassaan Shahawy as its first Muslim president. The Egyptian-born Los Angeles-born Egyptian American is following in the footsteps of several Supreme Court judges as well as one former president of America, Barack Obama.
