More along the lines Monster Hunter than Breath of The Wild.
The Pokemon Company has clarified that Pokemon Legends: Arceus is not an open-world game, as many assumed due to the original description of the game and by watching the trailers.
According to this clarification, the game will not be like Monster Hunter in that the player will run around the world doing whatever they want, but instead the main village will act as a base. The player will be assigned tasks to complete before heading out into the open.
Although the Pokemon Company did not specifically refer to Monster Hunter, it is similar to how expeditions work.
Here’s the statement in full sent to Kotaku:
In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Jubilife Village will serve as the base for surveying missions. Players will leave the village after being given an assignment or a request, and then set off to explore the Hisui region. Players will return to the village to finish their survey work and prepare for their next task. We look forward sharing more information about the Hisui area soon.
Set in an older version of the Sinnoh region, in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, you will be trying to complete the first-ever Pokedex.
With your choice of Rowlet or Cyndaquil as your starter Pokemon, you’ll be working with a mysterious professor who has traveled around the globe.
Gameplay lets you observe Pokemon and learn their behaviors. Then, carefully sneak up on them to aim your Poke Ball. Your ally Pokemon can battle wild Pokemon you wish to catch. You can simply throw the Poke Ball with your ally Pokemon in front of a wild Pokemon to enter a battle or command your Pokemon.
Arceas, a unique Pokemon that is believed to have shaped the world, has ties to your tale.
The game is slated to release for Switch on January 28.
