MLB SPORTS: 4: 00 AM UTC
LOS ANGELES — It’s fitting that the thrilling battle between the two teams with the best records in MLB will be decided by the third winner-takes-all game between these two rivals.
The previous elimination games were part a three-game NL tiebreaker in 1951 or ’62.. Both franchises were still in New York City at the time of the first meeting. The New York Giants defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers three times on Bobby Thomson’s Shot Heard Round the World. Four years after the clubs moved to the west, the ’62 set was held with San Francisco winning.
With a 7-2 victory in Tuesday’s Game 4, at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers saved themselves from elimination and will now face Oracle Park tonight for Game 5. Walker Buehler, Los Angeles’ starter, pitched on short rest for his first time in his career. He lasted 4 1/3 innings.
Both teams have won 109 this season. The 110 team will face the Braves in the NL Championship Series.
Let’s take an in-depth look at what you should know before we head into Thursday’s elimination match.
How can I see it and when is it on?
Game 5 is scheduled to start at 9: 07 p.m. ET/6: 07 p.m. PT on Thursday at Oracle Park and will be televised on TBS. You can also stream it on MLB.TV after authentication.
How might the starting lineup look?
Dodgers – The Dodgers may choose to keep the same lineup for Game 5, after a strong Game 4. Manager Dave Roberts has already confirmed that Gavin Lux (who reached base four times on Tuesday) will be drawn for a second start.
Giants: The Giants will once again stack their lineup of right-handed batters in an attempt to take advantage of the platoon advantage. However, the strategy did not produce the expected results in Game 2. Urias pitched five innings of one-run baseball to lead Los Angeles to a 9-2 victory at Oracle Park. While they have several hitters who have historically crushed southpaws, the Giants have gone 11-11 against left-handed starters since the All-Star break.
Who are the starting pitchers
Dodgers: Urias (20-3, 2. 96 The ERA) will make his postseason debut. In Game 2, the Dodgers won at Oracle Park by one run to Mexican-born left-hander. Urias will be making his seventh appearance against the Giants in 2021.. His record was 2-1 and he earned a 3. 38 He was 2-1 with a 3.
Giants: At 24 years and 330 days old, Webb (11-3, 3. 03 ERA) will become the youngest pitcher in Giants history to start a winner-take-all postseason game. Webb struck out 10 over 7 2/3 scoreless innings in a masterful performance in Game 1 and will be pitching on five days’ rest. Webb’s 13 starts in Oracle Park have seen the Giants go 7-0 with an 1. 78 his 14 appearances.
What will happen to the bullpens after the starter?
Dodgers – In a winner takes all game, almost everyone will be available to pitch for the Dodgers. Roberts stated that Max Scherzer won’t be available from the bullpen but that could change quickly in close games.
Giants: Giants’ ideal scenario would be for Webb to pitch deeply into the game, before potentially turning it over to Kevin Gausman. Gausman will then be available from the bullpen after Game 2. Camilo Doval, relief ace, should be available to pitch multiple innings if necessary after not pitching in Game 4.
Is there a way to get help if you are unable?
Dodgers will be available and ready for pitching.
Giants: San Francisco used seven relief pitchers to cover 6/3 innings after Anthony DeSclafani’s 1 1/3-inning game in Game 4. However, Gabe Kapler, the Giants manager, stated that he expected everyone to be available for Game 5. Kapler didn’t rule out Alex Wood, a left-hander who tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings in Game 3.
Are there any injuries to be aware of?
Dodgers. First baseman Max Muncy (left elbow dislocation) and left-hander Clayton Kershaw are both out of the NLDS. Kershaw will be out for the rest of the postseason. Although the Dodgers hope Muncy will return to action later in the month, he has not yet taken any swings since his injury.
Giants: Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt (left thumb injury) and veteran reliever Tony Watson are both out for the NLDS. Tommy La Stella, second baseman, is still suffering from left Achilles tightness. However, he won’t be starting against Urias.
Who is hot?
Dodgers: Betts is swinging a hot bat, going 7-for-20 with a homer in five postseason games. Betts is a star right fielder with an. 864 OPS. Lux was 2-for-2 in Game 4 with two walks. Smith is perhaps the best player in the postseason. He hit his second homer in Game 4, and leads the team with an OPS of 1. 206 OPS.
Giants: Bryant’s heat is beginning to show after struggling at the plate during the last couple of weeks of the regular season. He is 6-for-13 with a home run and two RBIs over the first four games of this series and could be a key bat against Urias, given his . 910 OPS this year against lefties.
