The Walt Disney Company was back at AfroTechWorld for the second consecutive year as a top-tier sponsor of diamonds. The conference took place November 8-13, 2021, and focused on bringing together engineers, venture capitalists, recruiters, technologists and culture enthusiasts from all over the world as one of the largest multicultural tech conferences in the United States.
The Walt Disney Company’s presence in AfroTech World continues its commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. It celebrates the Black community, their contributions and content. It facilitates meaningful connections between Disney representatives and AfroTech attendees. Finally, it hires top talent from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
AfroTech World offered a virtual experience that was immersive and interactive. It featured avatars built by attendees, keynote presentations, and virtual expo halls. There were also other areas like a beach and sports courts and a dance club to provide an authentic, memorable, and life-like experience for attendees. Over the course the event, attendees had the opportunity to meet with Disney representatives one-on-one, to take in content “in world”, and through Disney-owned activations. They also enjoyed a Disney+ Day celebration that featured a giveaway challenge, where participants were asked for their favorite Disney character to enter to win a six month Disney+ subscription.
“AfroTech World is the premier gathering of the Black technology community,” said Tony Williams, senior manager, Diversity Recruiting Programs. “Disney’s presence at this event is not only a reflection of our commitment to this community, but a strategic move to engage and recruit the best tech talent to our business… For many of our Black technologists, AfroTech World may be the only space where they are well represented and able to fully show up as themselves, comfortably.”
In addition to hosting an expo booth in the virtual AfroTech World, The Walt Disney Company held two virtual events of its own in conjunction with the conference. The first was a unique-Disney at AfroTech kickoff that featured the ABC News’ Soul of a Nation team. It included a discussion about the real realities of Black life, including topics such as spirituality and Black joy, sports activism, and racial injustice. The second event featured two days of programming that included panels discussing Disney’s culture, technology developments, and highlighting authentic voices from historically underrepresented groups in our storytelling. Representatives from Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, Studio Entertainment, Disney Parks, Experiences & Products, General Entertainment, ESPN & Sports Content and ESPN & Sports Content shared their careers with the audience. They discussed themes such as growth and how they overcome failures.
“I think the most important thing about AfroTech World is the diversity,” said Kennedy Maddox, outreach coordinator for The Walt Disney Company. “It’s important for Black talent have a spot at the company and AfroTech World is where that is celebrated As The Walt Disney Company continues its growth within the Black technology space. The participation in AfroTech World strengthened the company’s commitment to increasing and celebrating diversity in all levels within the workforce, content, and community.
Disney has a deep commitment to diversity and our stories. This extends to everyone who is creating, writing, designing, or building,” stated Niquita Taliaferro (product designer at Disney Streaming). “We have a lot of Black leadership, and that makes it feel like I’m at a place where my potential is unlimited. There’s opportunity for you here.”
