Our Michigan Story

Michigan, officially the **State of Michigan**, is a state in the **Upper Midwest** and **Great Lakes** region of the United States, famously known as the **Great Lakes State** and the **Wolverine State**. It became the **26th state** on January 26, 1837. With a population of approximately **10.13 million** as of July 2025 (around 10th most populous in the U.S.), it ranks 22nd–23rd in land area at about 96,714 square miles (including water) and features 83 counties. The state has seen modest population growth for four consecutive years, adding roughly 28,000 residents from July 2024 to 2025 (0.3%), with positive domestic migration for the first time in decades alongside international inflows—though overall growth remains slower than the national average and long-term projections suggest challenges from an aging population.

### Geography and Climate

Michigan's unique geography consists of two large peninsulas separated by the Straits of Mackinac: the **Upper Peninsula (UP)**, which borders Wisconsin and Canada, and the much larger **Lower Peninsula**, which resembles a mitten. It borders four of the five Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie), giving it the longest freshwater shoreline of any U.S. state. Key features include vast forests, sand dunes, over 11,000 inland lakes, the Porcupine Mountains, and the Mackinac Bridge (the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere). The climate is humid continental—cold, snowy winters (especially in the UP and near the lakes) and warm, humid summers—with significant lake-effect snow and moderation along the shores. This supports boating, fishing, skiing, hiking, and agriculture.

Major cities (approximate recent estimates):

- **Detroit** — the largest (~620,000–630,000; metro area is the economic core).

- **Grand Rapids** (~198,000–200,000).

- **Warren**, **Sterling Heights**, **Lansing** (state capital, ~112,000), **Ann Arbor** (home to the University of Michigan), and **Flint**.

Most residents live in the southern Lower Peninsula, particularly the Detroit and Grand Rapids metro areas.

### History

The name "Michigan" derives from an Ojibwe word meaning "large water" or "large lake." Indigenous peoples, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi (part of the Council of Three Fires), inhabited the region for millennia. French explorers and fur traders arrived in the 1600s, followed by British control after the French and Indian War. It became part of the Northwest Territory, experienced rapid settlement in the 19th century (lumber, mining, and farming booms), and grew into an industrial powerhouse. Michigan played key roles in the Underground Railroad, the auto industry revolution (Henry Ford and others), and the labor movement. Its motto is **"Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice"** ("If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you").

### Culture and Famous For

Michigan blends urban innovation, rural charm, Great Lakes culture, and a strong work ethic:

- **Nicknames**: **Great Lakes State** (official), **Wolverine State**, **Mitten State** (from the Lower Peninsula's shape), and historically the **Automobile State** or **Water Wonderland**.

- **Food** — Iconic **Coney dogs** (Detroit style), **pasties** (UP Cornish miner meat pies), **cherry pie** (Traverse City is the Cherry Capital), **Mackinac Island fudge**, Detroit-style pizza, and fresh Great Lakes fish (perch, whitefish). The state has vibrant craft beer and farm-to-table scenes.

- **Outdoors and Icons** — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks, Mackinac Island, Isle Royale National Park, endless beaches and lighthouses, and fall foliage. Sports are huge: Detroit's pro teams (Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings), University of Michigan and Michigan State athletics, and winter sports.

- **Other** — Automotive heritage (Motown music also originated in Detroit), strong Scandinavian and Polish influences, and a mix of "Pure Michigan" natural beauty with resilient industrial cities. State symbols include the apple blossom (flower) and white-tailed deer (animal).

The culture varies: bustling and diverse in metro Detroit, college-town vibrant in Ann Arbor/East Lansing, and rugged/outdoorsy in the UP and northern Lower Peninsula.

### Economy

Michigan's economy is diversified and resilient, with a historic foundation in manufacturing:

- **Key sectors** — Automotive and mobility (still central, including EVs and advanced manufacturing), healthcare and life sciences, advanced manufacturing/aerospace, agriculture (cherries, blueberries, dairy), tourism (Great Lakes and outdoors), and professional services.

- It ranks highly in workforce development and opportunity in some recent reports, with strengths in talent pipelines and cost of doing business. Recent forecasts for 2026–2027 project modest payroll job growth (around 16,000–17,000 annually), concentrated in non-cyclical sectors like government, leisure/hospitality, and healthcare, while manufacturing (especially transportation equipment) shows mixed signals amid national uncertainties. Challenges include an aging workforce, housing affordability, and adapting to shifts in auto and inflation pressures.

### Government and Current Notes (as of March 2026)

- **Governor**: Gretchen Whitmer (Democrat), in her final term (term-limited; the 2026 gubernatorial election is a major race, including potential independent candidates).

- Michigan has **divided government**: Democratic governor, Republican House majority, Democratic Senate majority. The 2026 legislative session is underway (convened January 2026), with ongoing work on bills (recent activity includes presentations to the governor and House sessions in March). Governor Whitmer delivered her 2026 State of the State address on February 25, focusing on literacy, housing, health care affordability, and building on bipartisan progress amid national uncertainties. New laws from prior sessions continue to take effect, and the budget process remains active.

For visitors, **Michigan.org** (Pure Michigan) is the official tourism site, offering guides to Detroit's renaissance, Grand Rapids' beer scene, Mackinac Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes, UP adventures, wine trails, and seasonal festivals. Michigan offers dramatic contrasts—urban energy and Motown history, pristine lakes and dunes, world-class freshwater shores, and hearty Midwestern spirit—making it ideal for road trips, beach escapes, or cultural exploration.

What specifically about Michigan interests you—Detroit and the auto/Motown scene, Great Lakes beaches and outdoors (UP or dunes), food (Coney dogs/pasties), sports (Lions or college rivalries), current politics/budget, travel tips, or something else?
