Our North Carolina Story

North Carolina, officially the **State of North Carolina**, is a state in the **Southeastern** United States, part of the **South Atlantic** region. It is one of the original 13 colonies and became the **12th state** to ratify the U.S. Constitution on November 21, 1789. Known as the **Tar Heel State**, it has earned nicknames like the **Old North State**, **First in Freedom** (for early Revolutionary actions), and **Variety Vacationland** for its diverse landscapes. With a population of approximately **11.2 million** as of July 2025 (9th most populous in the U.S.), it ranks 28th in area at about 53,819 square miles and features 100 counties. The state continues rapid growth, ranking third-fastest in the nation and first for domestic (state-to-state) migration in recent Census data, adding nearly 150,000 residents from July 2024–2025.

### Geography and Climate
North Carolina spans three distinct regions: the **Coastal Plain** (beaches, Outer Banks, and lowlands in the east), the **Piedmont** (rolling hills, urban centers, and farmland in the middle), and the **Appalachian Mountains** (Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains in the west). It borders Virginia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, South Carolina and Georgia to the south, and Tennessee to the west. Key features include the **Outer Banks** barrier islands, Cape Hatteras, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and rivers like the Cape Fear and Neuse. The climate is humid subtropical—hot, humid summers and mild winters—with more varied, cooler conditions in the mountains and hurricane risks along the coast. This diversity supports beaches, hiking, skiing, boating, and agriculture.

Major cities (approximate recent estimates):
- **Charlotte** — largest (~960,000–978,000), a major banking and finance hub.
- **Raleigh** — the state capital (~508,000–517,000; part of the Research Triangle).
- **Greensboro**, **Durham** (tech and education powerhouse), **Winston-Salem**, **Fayetteville**, **Cary**, and **Wilmington**.

Growth concentrates in the Charlotte and Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham) metros, driven by jobs, affordability relative to other states, and lifestyle appeal (mountains, beaches, lakes).

### History
Indigenous peoples, including the Cherokee and many Algonquian and Siouan tribes, inhabited the region for millennia. European settlement began with the failed Roanoke Colony (1580s, the "Lost Colony") and English colonists in the 1600s–1700s. North Carolina played key roles in the American Revolution (Mecklenburg Declaration claims, Battle of Guilford Courthouse) and was a major battleground in the Civil War. The state contributed to the Wright brothers' first powered flight at Kitty Hawk (1903—"First in Flight"), the Civil Rights Movement (Greensboro sit-ins), and post-WWII industrialization. Its motto is **"Esse quam videri"** ("To be, rather than to seem").

### Culture and Famous For
North Carolina blends Southern hospitality, mountain Appalachian traditions, coastal Gullah/Geechee influences, and modern urban energy:
- **Nicknames**: **Tar Heel State** (official; from colonial naval stores production and Civil War resilience—"stuck to their heels like tar").
- **Food** — Iconic dishes include **Eastern-style vinegar-based barbecue**, **Lexington-style pork shoulder**, shrimp and grits, hushpuppies, collard greens, livermush, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts (Winston-Salem). The state leads in sweet potatoes and is known for craft beer and wine (Yadkin Valley).
- **Music and Arts** — Strong bluegrass, country, and beach music scenes; legends like Earl Scruggs; vibrant arts in Asheville and the Research Triangle.
- **Outdoors and Icons** — Outer Banks beaches and lighthouses, Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains, Appalachian Trail, golf (Pinehurst), and NASCAR (roots in the state). "First in Flight" at Kill Devil Hills.
- **Sports** — College powerhouses (UNC Tar Heels, Duke Blue Devils, NC State Wolfpack); NFL's Carolina Panthers (Charlotte); NBA's Charlotte Hornets; minor league and racing.

The culture varies regionally: beachy and historic on the coast, innovative and diverse in the Piedmont cities, and traditional/mountain in the west.

### Economy
North Carolina has a diversified, growing economy:
- **Key sectors** — Finance/banking (Charlotte as a major center), technology and research (Research Triangle Park), manufacturing (advanced, automotive, aerospace), agriculture (tobacco history, poultry, sweet potatoes, Christmas trees), tourism, and healthcare.
- It benefits from business-friendly policies, corporate relocations, and strong job markets in urban areas. Rapid population growth supports continued expansion, though challenges include infrastructure strain, housing affordability in booming areas, and regional disparities. The state ranks highly for economic development and quality-of-life factors attracting younger workers.

### Government and Current Notes (as of March 2026)
- **Governor**: Josh Stein (Democrat).
- North Carolina has **divided government** (Democratic governor; Republican-controlled General Assembly). The 2026 legislative short session is scheduled to convene on April 21 and adjourn August 31. The state remains the only one without a full new budget since FY 2025 began (relying on prior laws and mini-budgets). In March 2026, Governor Stein proposed a $1.4 billion "Critical Needs Budget" to address urgent issues like Medicaid funding shortfalls, retroactive pay raises for teachers, law enforcement, nurses, and other public servants. Negotiations continue amid calls for fiscal responsibility and investments in education, public safety, and growth. The state has a packed 2026 events calendar, including NASCAR, soccer tournaments, music festivals, and golf.

For visitors, **VisitNC.com** is the official tourism site, highlighting the mountains (Asheville, Biltmore Estate), Piedmont cities, and coast (Outer Banks, Wilmington). North Carolina offers "for real" variety—beaches for relaxation, mountains for adventure, vibrant cities for culture and jobs, and Southern charm throughout.
