Our North Dakota Story

North Dakota, officially the **State of North Dakota**, is a state in the **Upper Midwest** and **Great Plains** region of the United States, known as the **Peace Garden State** or **Flickertail State**. It became the **39th state** on November 2, 1889 (admitted simultaneously with South Dakota). With a population of approximately **799,000–811,000** as of mid-2025 to early 2026 estimates (47th in the U.S., though showing steady recent growth to record highs), it is one of the least populous and least densely populated states, covering about 70,698 square miles (19th in area) with 53 counties.

### Geography and Climate

North Dakota borders **Canada** (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) to the north, **Minnesota** to the east (mostly along the Red River), **South Dakota** to the south, and **Montana** to the west. The **Missouri River** and its reservoirs (like Lake Sakakawea) dominate the western and central parts, while the east features the fertile Red River Valley. The landscape includes vast prairies, rolling hills, badlands in the west (Theodore Roosevelt National Park), and the scenic Pembina Gorge in the northeast. It is heavily agricultural with abundant wildlife. The climate is continental—extremely cold, snowy winters and warm summers—with wide temperature swings and occasional blizzards or severe thunderstorms. This supports farming, ranching, hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

Major cities (approximate recent estimates):

- **Fargo** — the largest (~131,000–141,000; metro area drives much of the state's growth).

- **Bismarck** — the state capital (~75,000–80,000).

- **Grand Forks** (~59,000–60,000).

- **Minot** (~47,000), **West Fargo**, and **Williston** (energy hub).

Most of the population lives in the eastern Red River Valley or along the Missouri River corridor.

### History

Named after the Dakota Sioux people, the region was home to Indigenous tribes (including Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota) for millennia. It was part of the Louisiana Purchase, explored by Lewis and Clark (who wintered at Fort Mandan), and saw fur trading and military posts. The Dakota Territory was established in 1861; the 1889 land division and statehood followed railroad expansion and homesteading. The early 20th century brought massive wheat farming ("Breadbasket" reputation), the Nonpartisan League (progressive farm politics), and oil discoveries. The state endured the Dust Bowl and saw booms/busts tied to agriculture and energy. It has a strong tradition of cooperatives and rural self-reliance.

### Culture and Famous For

North Dakota embodies Great Plains resilience, Scandinavian and German-Russian immigrant heritage, and a tight-knit, community-focused spirit:

- **Nicknames**: **Peace Garden State** (official, from the International Peace Garden on the Canadian border), **Roughrider State** (from Theodore Roosevelt's cavalry), and **Flickertail State** (from the ground squirrel).

- **Food** — Hearty Midwestern fare with strong Norwegian, German, and Ukrainian influences: **tater tot hotdish** (casserole), **knoephla soup** (potato and dumpling), **lefse** (potato flatbread), **kuchen** (coffee cake), cheese buttons, fleischkuekle, and walleye or bison dishes. "Supper" often means the evening meal in rural areas.

- **Outdoors and Heritage** — Theodore Roosevelt National Park (badlands, bison, wild horses), International Peace Garden, Lewis and Clark Trail, state parks for hunting/fishing, and Route 66-era or pioneer history. The state celebrates its agricultural roots with fairs, rodeos, and powwows.

- **Other** — Strong college sports (North Dakota State Bison, University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks), oil boom culture in the west, and a reputation for friendliness, harsh winters, and "North Dakota nice." State symbols include the wild prairie rose (flower) and western meadowlark (bird).

The culture blends rural values, energy independence, and a deep connection to the land.

### Economy

North Dakota has a resource-driven economy with notable resilience:

- **Key sectors** — Energy (oil from the Bakken formation, natural gas, coal, and renewables), agriculture (wheat, soybeans, corn, barley, livestock—one of the top U.S. producers), manufacturing, healthcare, and tourism/outdoor recreation.

- It often boasts low unemployment (historically below national averages) and steady growth tied to energy and farming. Recent population gains reflect economic opportunities and quality-of-life factors. Challenges include rural depopulation in some areas, commodity price volatility, and workforce needs, but overall momentum remains positive with emphasis on diversification and infrastructure.

### Government and Current Notes (as of March 2026)

- **Governor**: Kelly Armstrong (Republican), in his first term.

- North Dakota has a strong **Republican trifecta**. The 69th Legislative Assembly held its regular session in 2025; a short **special session** occurred in January 2026 focused on funding for the Rural Health Transformation Program and related matters (it adjourned quickly after passing targeted bills). Governor Armstrong delivered his 2026 State of the State address during the special session. Ongoing interim committee work covers higher education funding, government efficiency, water topics, and information technology. Recent legislative highlights include game and fish funding, wildlife-related bills, and veteran hunting licenses. Some statewide Republican incumbents have opted to skip the party convention for the primary process. The state continues to highlight its growth, community values, and opportunities for new residents.
