Our West Virginia Story

West Virginia is a landlocked state in the **Appalachian Mountains** of the United States, often called the **Mountain State**. It joined the Union as the **35th state** on June 20, 1863, during the Civil War after separating from Virginia (it remained in the Union while Virginia seceded). With a population of approximately **1.77 million** (around 39th in the U.S. as of recent 2025–2026 estimates), it is one of the smallest and least populous states, covering about 24,230 square miles (41st in area).

### Geography and Climate

West Virginia is the highest state east of the Mississippi River in average elevation (around 1,500 feet), dominated by rugged mountains, narrow valleys, dense forests, and winding rivers. It borders Pennsylvania and Maryland to the northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. Key features include the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains, the Ohio River, and areas like the Potomac Highlands and New River Gorge. The climate is humid continental—mild to warm summers and cold, snowy winters—with abundant outdoor opportunities for hiking, rafting, skiing, and hunting. Much of the state remains heavily forested.

Major cities include:

- **Charleston** — the state capital and largest city (population around 49,000), known for its chemical industry history ("Chemical Valley").

- **Huntington**, **Morgantown** (home to West Virginia University), **Parkersburg**, **Wheeling**, and **Beckley**.

The state has quirky town names like Odd, Booger Hole, and Left Hand, reflecting its unique Appalachian character.

### History

Originally part of Virginia, the region was explored by Europeans in the 1600s–1700s and saw early settlement amid conflicts with Native American tribes. During the Civil War, western Virginians—many Union sympathizers opposed to slavery and distant from Richmond—formed a new state. It became a major coal-producing region in the late 19th and 20th centuries, fueling industrial growth but also labor struggles (e.g., mine wars). The motto **"Montani semper liberi"** ("Mountaineers are always free") captures its independent spirit. The state has a rich heritage of folk music, crafts, and self-reliance shaped by geographic isolation.

### Culture and Famous For

West Virginia embodies Appalachian culture with a strong emphasis on resilience, hospitality, and connection to the land:

- **Outdoors** — World-class whitewater rafting (New River Gorge), hiking (including the Appalachian Trail), rock climbing, ATV trails (Hatfield-McCoy), skiing, and scenic drives. It's marketed as **"Almost Heaven"** with a focus on nature and small-town charm.

- **Music and Heritage** — Bluegrass, old-time, and country music roots; folk arts, glassmaking (from the Ohio Valley), and festivals like the Mountain State Forest Festival or Italian Heritage Festival.

- **Food** — Hearty Appalachian fare including pepperoni rolls, ramps (wild leeks), buckwheat cakes, and venison or trout. Tamarack showcases local crafts and cuisine.

- **Sports and Identity** — Passionate Mountaineer fans (West Virginia University); the state is tied to coal mining history, though shifting toward tourism and energy diversity.

- Nicknames: Mountain State, Almost Heaven.

The culture blends Scottish-Irish, German, and other European influences with Native American and African American elements, fostering tight-knit communities and a "by God" pride (as in "West By God Virginia").

### Economy

Historically dominated by **coal mining** and energy (it's a major bituminous coal producer), the economy is transitioning toward natural gas, manufacturing, tourism, and services. Other sectors include chemicals, forestry, and healthcare. Challenges include an aging population, low workforce participation (often the nation's lowest), out-migration, and poverty rates above the national average in some areas. Recent efforts focus on economic development, with announcements of investments in energy and infrastructure. GDP ranks lower nationally, but the state emphasizes "Mountain State Comeback" initiatives.

### Government and Current Notes (as of March 2026)

- **Governor**: Patrick Morrisey (Republican), in his second term. He has highlighted progress in education funding, infrastructure, energy, tax relief (including pushes for income tax cuts), and job growth during the 2026 legislative session, which recently concluded.

- West Virginia is a solidly conservative ("red") state politically.

- Ongoing topics include budget planning for FY 2026 (with focus on reserves, retirement systems, and long-term liabilities), population decline (slowing but continuing due to deaths outpacing births and net out-migration), and economic diversification amid energy sector shifts. The state touts strong fundamentals and recent investment announcements while addressing workforce and healthcare needs.

For visitors, head to **wvtourism.com** (Almost Heaven) for road trips, state parks, waterfall trails, charming small towns, and outdoor adventures. Highlights include New River Gorge National Park, Harpers Ferry, the Greenbrier resort, Blackwater Falls, and Seneca Rocks. Whether you're into whitewater rafting, fall foliage, or exploring historic sites, West Virginia offers rugged beauty and authentic mountain experiences.
