Our Minnesota Story

Minnesota, officially the **State of Minnesota**, is a state in the **Upper Midwest** region of the United States, known as the **Land of 10,000 Lakes** (it actually has over 11,800) and the **North Star State**. It became the **32nd state** on May 11, 1858. With a population of approximately **5.83–5.87 million** as of 2025–2026 estimates (around 22nd in the U.S.), it ranks 12th in land area at about 86,936 square miles and features 87 counties. Recent growth has been modest (adding about 33,000 residents from 2024 to 2025, or ~0.57%), with a notable rebound in domestic migration but slower overall momentum due to declining international immigration and natural increase.

### Geography and Climate

Minnesota borders **Canada** (Ontario and Manitoba) to the north, **Wisconsin** and **Iowa** to the east and south (with the Mississippi River forming part of the eastern boundary), and **North Dakota** and **South Dakota** to the west. Its landscape includes the rugged **North Woods** and Boundary Waters in the northeast, fertile prairies and farmland in the south and west, and the scenic **Lake Superior** shoreline. The state is dotted with thousands of lakes, rivers, and forests (covering about one-third of the land). The climate is continental—long, cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers—with significant lake-effect moderation near Superior. This supports world-class outdoor recreation, including boating, fishing, hiking, skiing, and ice fishing.

Major cities (approximate 2025–2026 estimates):

- **Minneapolis** — the largest (~427,000–430,000).

- **St. Paul** — the state capital (~305,000–311,000; the "Twin Cities" metro is the economic and cultural core).

- **Rochester** (~122,000–124,000; home to the Mayo Clinic).

- **Duluth**, **Bloomington**, **Brooklyn Park**, and others.

Most residents live in the Twin Cities metro area or along the southern and eastern corridors.

### History

The name "Minnesota" comes from a Dakota word meaning "cloudy water" or "sky-tinted water," referring to the Minnesota River. Indigenous peoples, including the Dakota (Sioux) and Ojibwe (Chippewa), have lived here for millennia. French explorers arrived in the 1600s, followed by British and American control. It became a territory in 1849 and a state amid westward expansion and lumber/mining booms. Minnesota played key roles in the Civil War (high Union troop contribution per capita), the Dakota War of 1862, and later industrial growth. It pioneered progressive policies like workers' compensation and has a strong Scandinavian and German immigrant heritage. Its motto is **"L'Étoile du Nord"** ("The Star of the North").

### Culture and Famous For

Minnesota embodies "Minnesota Nice"—polite, community-oriented Midwestern values—with a love for the outdoors, sports, and hearty living:

- **Nicknames**: **Land of 10,000 Lakes** (most iconic), **North Star State**, **Gopher State**, or **Bread and Butter State**.

- **Food** — Hotdish (casseroles), **Lutefisk** and other Scandinavian dishes, walleye (state fish), wild rice, cheese curds, and the famous **Juicy Lucy** burger (Minneapolis origin). The state has a thriving craft beer and farm-to-table scene.

- **Outdoors** — Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Voyageurs National Park, Superior Hiking Trail, and endless lakes for fishing/boating. Winter sports (skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing) are huge.

- **Other** — **Mall of America** (Bloomington), Mayo Clinic (world-renowned healthcare), strong arts/theater scene, and passionate sports fandom: Minnesota Vikings (NFL), Timberwolves (NBA), Wild (NHL), Twins (MLB), and college powerhouses (University of Minnesota Golden Gophers). The culture blends progressive urban vibes in the Twin Cities with more traditional rural values elsewhere.

### Economy

Minnesota has a highly diversified, resilient economy with high per capita income and education levels:

- **Key sectors** — Healthcare and medical technology (Medtronic, Mayo Clinic), manufacturing (Fortune 500 companies, advanced industries), agriculture/food processing (one of the top U.S. states for ag innovation), finance/insurance, headquarters operations (17 Fortune 500 companies), and tourism/outdoor recreation.

- It ranks high in labor force participation, patents per capita, and economic diversity. Recent outlooks note strengths in life sciences, clean tech, data centers, and food/ag innovation, though overall GDP growth has slowed and trails the national average in some metrics. Challenges include flat workforce growth, housing affordability in urban areas, and adapting to emerging sectors like AI and semiconductors. The state benefits from a skilled, educated workforce and central location.

### Government and Current Notes (as of March 2026)

- **Governor**: Tim Walz (Democrat).

- Minnesota has a **Democratic trifecta** (Democrats control the governorship and both legislative chambers). The 2026 legislative session (part of the biennial cycle) began in February with a day of remembrance for the late Rep. Melissa Hortman and others amid recent tragedies. Priorities include budget/supplemental spending (Gov. Walz proposed measures to lower costs for families and address workforce issues), recovery efforts, education, public safety, and economic development. The session has faced challenges from recent events but continues work on key policy areas.

For visitors, **ExploreMinnesota.com** is the official tourism site, guiding you to the Twin Cities' urban energy, North Shore drives along Lake Superior, Boundary Waters adventures, Mall of America, Rochester's medical campus, or fall foliage and winter festivals. Minnesota offers four distinct seasons, friendly people, pristine lakes and forests, and a high quality of life—whether you're into urban culture, outdoor escapes, or Midwestern comfort food.

What specifically about Minnesota interests you—the Twin Cities scene, outdoor recreation and lakes, Mayo Clinic/healthcare, food (hotdish/Juicy Lucy), sports, current legislative session, economy, or something else?
